After a long trip to Brazil where our goal was to meet the most skilled and renowned artisans in the country who use various very ancient weaving and embroidery techniques. After traveling some 3000 km across 3 states of this vast country, we had exceptional encounters and brought back some rare gems. This hammock is made using Richelieu embroidery. The Cardinal Duke of Richelieu, Prime Minister of Louis XIII, brought weavers from Italy around the year 1600 and developed with them what would become Richelieu embroidery. This technique was exported to Brazil by the Portuguese in the 17th century. Today, it has almost disappeared in Europe, with only a few enthusiasts maintaining this tradition, and fabrics can be seen in museums. Nowadays, this weaving is still very much alive in Brazil but is also becoming rare…
Brazilian hammocks are a traditional craft emblematic of the country. Among the artisans who keep this tradition alive, the Mocoto artisan community association stands out for its exceptional quality. Located in the village of Varzea Alegre, in the heart of the state of Ceará, this association is led by two sisters, Rozinha and Ceilda, who have overcome the challenges related to their birth deformities to turn their passion into an internationally renowned art.
When you meet Rozinha and Ceilda, you are immediately struck by their energy and passion for their craft. Isolated in their village, they regularly travel to major cities in Brazil to showcase their creations and have even participated in events in New York. They also made it into the Guinness Book of Records thanks to the largest gathering of crocheters in the world that they organized in the village square.
Their expertise is unique, and their hammocks stand out for their exceptional quality. The weavers gather in a small workshop to work on cotton percale, a fabric similar to denim that is ultra-resistant and cool. The fringes, on the other hand, are handmade with crochet and are among the most elaborate models in the country. The hammock’s hem is also carefully crafted, with a Richelieu embroidery step done by sewing machine for a perfect finish. To learn more: Mocoto Brazilian Hammocks
