We have just returned from a long trip to Brazil, where our goal was to meet the most talented and renowned artisans in the country (those who master ancient weaving and embroidery techniques). After traveling nearly 3,000 km across three states of this vast country, we made exceptional encounters and brought back some rare gems.
This Brazilian hammock is made using Richelieu embroidery. This technique, invented in the 17th century by Cardinal Duke of Richelieu in France, was imported to Brazil by the Portuguese. Today, almost extinct in Europe, it remains alive in certain Brazilian regions, even though it is becoming rarer. Each hammock thus becomes a unique piece, a true luxury hammock full of history and authenticity.
Brazilian hammocks are an emblematic traditional craft, and among the artisans who carry on this tradition, the Mocoto artisan community association stands out for its talent and creativity. Located in the village of Varzea Alegre, in the heart of the State of Ceará, this association is led by Rozinha and Ceilda, two sisters who have turned their passion into internationally renowned art despite life's challenges.
Meeting Rozinha and Ceilda means discovering an energy and love for their craft that immediately leaves a mark. They regularly travel to major cities in Brazil and internationally to showcase their creations, and have even participated in events in New York. Their unique expertise earned them a place in the Guinness Book of Records for organizing the largest gathering of crocheters in the world in their village square.
The incredible Mocoto hammocks are handwoven with cotton percale, a durable and cool fabric similar to denim. The fringes are hand-crocheted, and the hammock's hem features carefully crafted Richelieu embroidery for a perfect finish. Each luxury hammock reflects the talent and creativity of the artisans who make it.
If you are looking for a premium hammock with a unique design and exceptional quality, Mocoto hammocks are an ideal choice. Each model is different, with its own character, embodying Brazilian tradition and craftsmanship. At Tropical Hamac, we have been traveling across Latin America since 1988 in search of the best artisans to offer you incredible and authentic hammocks. We are proud to collaborate with Rozinha and Ceilda, who passionately and skillfully perpetuate a millennial tradition.
The suitable stand for this hammock is our Maya King model.
