More and more hammocks promising to withstand all weather conditions are appearing on the Internet. This trend emerged around 2005, when the price of cotton started to soar. It was a great opportunity for large hammock manufacturers and major distributors who could finally switch to polypropylene yarn, much cheaper (or plastic to be more precise), and thus promise a hammock that resists all weather. But what is the reality of all these 100% polypropylene hammocks or hamaTex, flexTex, and all other technological and dreamy names?
Fine woven plastic degrades under UV rays. The fabric heats up and produces static electricity. Its machine durability is poor. Natural dirt, pollen, and fungi slip into the mesh and cause mold. The plastic itself does not mold, but what lodges in it does.
At Tropical Hamac, our hammock selections are very precise. For an outdoor hammock, we know of no other option than nylon yarn and that it should be a net rather than woven fabric. The Akumal hammock is the only hammock made for the outdoors. The price may seem high, but this is due to the material and, in the case of this hammock, also because it is entirely handmade. The Akumal Nylon model can be left outside all year round without any problem.
