Many of you think that you need to enter your hamac -> hammock after each use. Cotton is a natural material that has excellent properties for outdoor use. If it gets wet, it will dry afterwards. These are the cushions that never dry and mold very quickly. These are also the hammocks of poor quality that do not last, because the cotton with which they are made has not been properly cleared of its natural impurities, thus providing a good meal for mold fungi! Textile work is a craft that we strive to do as well as possible by first and foremost checking, with our manufacturers, the thread they use, their dyeing machines, their diameter, their resistance to breaking, etc....
From experience (we have been in the store since 1993 here on our beautiful, somewhat rainy southern Landes coast!), our least careful customers come replace our products on average every 8 to 10 years!! And these are not our most luxurious models. Not at all; I am talking about ourthe most economical hammocks. Those who also buy from us are some campgrounds to equip their pitches.
Weatherproof hammocks: a bad choice !
For a few years now, models have been appearing that are promised to be made to stay outdoors indefinitely. These are very synthetic materials given charming names and various labels. But upon closer inspection, you realize that they are often 100% plastic or polyester!! These materials are not pleasant on the skin or for use in the sun. In reality, these materials are mainly designed to significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of hammocks for large retailers. Because plastic is much less expensive than cotton, and since a good hammock weighs between 1.4 and 2 kg, you can easily understand the advantage. A... outdoor hammock ?The good excuse....
Today, with the benefit of 4 to 5 years of hindsight, even mold eventually settles in (the microscopic organic waste trapped in the mesh). Moreover, after a few machine washes, the fabric no longer holds its shape. Another strange fact is that we have reports of static electricity when touching these fabrics when they are in the sun! Not to mention the heat from these fabrics. Cotton will always remain our main asset for durability, long-lasting shape, and comfort.
Which hammocks can be left hanging outdoors ?
Since I have been looking for hammocks, I have only found oA single model of hammock for outdoor use. It is made from 100% nylon thread. Nylon is the material used for fishing nets, designed to withstand marine environments. This is our model. Mexican Hammock Akumal. This hammock fears neither frost, nor the sun, nor the moon, nor the rain. Moreover, it is a large... double hammock. Leave it outside, we guarantee it for 5 years! Not bad for an outdoor hammock, right ?
Some precautions for using your hammock outdoors.
Some of you live in very rainy regions or set up your hammock under heavily shaded trees in environments that are almost always humid. In this specific case, we offer... Mexican hammocks made of polypropylene mesh. Warning, polypropylene does not like the sun or only very little. Only in very humid and shaded environments.
Finally, know that a good user does not complicate their life. Their hammock is always there, ready to be used. Children jump into it at any time of the day. People even stop by for just 5 minutes. We only recommend taking your hammock down when you know the weather will be bad for several days; otherwise, night dew or a passing rain shower will not be a problem. The hammock will dry quickly. Also, be careful when using it in direct sunlight, especially under the strong sun rays of July or August between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The secret to making your hammock last outdoors: machine washing.
We cannot say it enough: a hammock is not a piece of furniture, it is a textile!!! In Latin America, when it is used as an everyday bed, it is washed in the machine every 10 to 15 days. Wash your hammock in the machine (ours can be washed up to 60°C) at least once a year before putting it away for the off-season. Why at the end of the season? Even if your fabric looks clean to the naked eye, due to outdoor use, some... Millions of microscopic organic wastes are embedded in the web.. These are the materials that will mold when they are kept warm and enclosed in your folded hammock.
Once your hammock is thoroughly cleaned, do not store it in your garden shed during the winter due to moisture and mice. This is how your beautiful cotton or recycled cotton hammock will last for many years. Guaranteed by Tropical Hamac, with 25 years of experience backed by testimonials from our customers in-store !
Second secret: the quality of the thread.
Thread is purchased on a global market in many different qualities. An inexpensive cotton thread will have undergone few washes. before being sold. The washing of the thread is intended to remove all organic waste from the cotton. When the cotton is picked from the field, it comes with leaves and branches embedded in the cotton. These materials are what will mold. Ironically, you often think that these unbleached fabrics, in which you can see many small gray or black inclusions, are very sturdy. They resemble burlap!
On the other hand, the more the raw cotton has been washed (for example, for mercerized cotton thread), the more we will have a beautiful unbleached fabric, soft, smooth, and with a nice color. You will therefore understand that cheap hammocks are made with the most economical thread possible.
