More and more hammocks are appearing on the Internet, promised to you as weatherproof. This trend appeared around 2005, when the price of cotton began to skyrocket. A great opportunity for large hammock manufacturers and distributors who could finally turn to polypropylene thread (or plastic, to be more precise) and thus promise a hammock against all weather conditions. But what is really the case with all these 100% polypropylene hammocks or hamaTex, flexTex, and all other technological and dreamy names?
Fine woven plastic degrades with UV exposure. The fabric heats up and produces static electricity. The durability in the washing machine is not good. Natural dirt, pollens, fungi slip into the meshes and mold. The plastic itself does not mold, but what lodges in it does.
At Tropical Influences, our hammock choices are very selective. For an outdoor hammock, we know of no other option than nylon thread and that it be netted rather than woven fabric.
The Akumal hammock is, according to our 30 years of experience, the only hammock made for outdoor use. The price may seem high, but this is due to the material and, for this hammock, also the fact that it is entirely handmade.
