How to Choose a Freestanding Hammock? Our Expert Tips from Enthusiastic Specialists

On the Internet, we are all tempted to compare prices above all else. However, when it comes to choosing a freestanding hammock, there is much more to consider than just the listed price. Comfort, the quality of the materials, the product’s durability, and the compatibility between the hammock and its stand are essential for an optimal experience.

Two types of hammocks to know about

There are two main types of hammocks:

The hammock with wooden spreader bars (called also a bar hammock or Western hammock), which must be stretched and is generally used on the back, lengthwise.

The hammock without bars, of Latin American origin (our specialty since 1988), which must be installed in a curved manner and is practiced diagonally, in the fetal position or sitting. The latter is much more comfortable and enveloping, provided it is used with an appropriate support.

The length/height ratio of the support: a key point

An ill-fitting hammock stand can completely ruin comfort. Too tight, you’ll feel like you’re trapped in a canvas that’s too stiff; nicely curved, you enjoy a soft, stretchable, relaxing bed. At Tropical Hamac, we have long worked with specialized manufacturers to offer you stands with perfect dimensions. Between 1995 and 2005, we even designed our own models in our workshops, before the arrival of laminated arc-shaped stands. Compare the heights of our stands with those on the market: you’ll immediately see the difference.

Maintenance of your hammock stand: keep it in mind !

A metal hammock stand can last a very long time if it is maintained. Even if it is not made of stainless steel, it can be effectively protected. The first signs of rust often appear at the joints (screws, tubes, etc.).

Maintenance tip: Use a special type of paint like Hammerite (thick, durable, with metallic microparticles), available at hardware stores. A single coat, applied after light sanding, will protect the metal for about 3 years. No need for a rust inhibitor beforehand !

Choosing the Right Hammock: Criteria Not to Overlook

Choosing a quality hammock requires attention, especially online where you can find everything. As French people, we know how to choose a good camembert, but when it comes to hammocks, that's another story 😉. Here are some objective criteria:

Weight of the hammock : reliable indicator of its density and durability.

Thread composition : prefer a thread rich in cotton (polyester makes the hammock less soft and warmer).

Canvas width A real double hammock starts at 160 cm, not at 100 cm !

Number of suspension cables : the more numerous they are, the better the weight distribution.

What they don't tell you:

The quality of the thread: tested by hand at the manufacturer by us.

The weaving method: crucial to prevent the fabric from deforming too quickly.

Today, we use recycled cottons dyed with advanced processes, ensuring long-lasting colors. But be careful: some cheap hammocks stretch excessively to the point of "trapping" you like in a pocket…

Beware of 100% polyester "outdoor" hammocks

Terms like "outdoor hammock" can sometimes be misleading. If the fabric is polyester, you are actually dealing with plastic. These hammocks:

  • heat up quickly in the sun
  • sometimes generate static electricity,
  • degrade quickly under UV light,
  • are unpleasant to the touch,
  • and despite their promise, can mold.

Reminder: your skin is in direct contact with the hammock. Treat it gently !

Care of a textile hammock: simple and effective

A hammock can be washed in a machine, like any other textile. In Brazil, hammocks are washed every two weeks by those who sleep in them every night. In France, for outdoor use:

  • Wash your hammock at 40°C in the machine.
  • Dry it in the open air, never in a tumble dryer.
  • Store it in a dry place during the winter.

This simple gesture extends its lifespan by several years.

Since 1988, long before the arrival of the Internet, we have been living this passion for hammocks with both dedication and pleasure. We are here to advise you, guide you, and help you discover the art of lying down comfortably. You can also download our instructions in the attached documents tab.
