In Colombia, the hammock has always been part of daily life. Along with Mexico and Brazil, it is one of the great hammock countries. There, people grow up with it. From childhood, they fall asleep in it, relax in it, and also dream in it. The body naturally and almost instinctively adapts to it. And the hammock becomes a companion at all times. It is used as a main bed, as extra sleeping space when friends come over, or simply to take a break. In large cities like Barranquilla, Medellín, or Bogotá, you increasingly see it in apartments: hung on a balcony, in a living room, sometimes even in front of the TV. The hammock is hung from the ceiling (concrete) and then adjusted with ropes and hooks. Inspiring, isn’t it?
A good hammock is like a good pair of jeans or a nice pair of shoes: if well made, it can last for years, even generations. This is the case with our Colombian hammocks. Only the ends (the hammock arms) sometimes need to be replaced after 7 to 10 years. This is a service we offer, custom-made in our workshop. Hammock arm repair
The lifespan of a hammock mainly depends... on you! Here are two ways to use it:
Total relaxation version: Your hammock is always set up, ready to welcome naps for the whole family. You let it live its life and machine washing? You often forget.
Extreme care version: You take it out when you need it, then put it away, and wash it regularly at 40°C like real household linen.
In both cases, the same hammock can last 5, 10, or even 15 years. It’s all a matter of use and maintenance.
✔️ Wash it in the machine once or twice a year (except Mexican mesh hammocks, which should be hand washed).
✔️ Avoid leaving it out in the rain for weeks.
✔️ Bring it in when heavy rain is forecast.
✔️ Remember to wash it at the end of the season to remove dust, pollen, and micro-debris which, combined with moisture, can cause mold.
Here, the hammock is not yet part of everyday habits. It is seen as outdoor furniture, to be installed between two trees. But in Latin America, it is considered a household textile, just like sheets or curtains. It is washed, cared for, and slept in every night. In some Colombian campsites, when you rent a hammock, you are given a clean and freshly washed model. And that’s only natural.
