Although the hammock is not originally from Mexico, its history dates back nearly a thousand years. It is believed to have been introduced to the Yucatán Peninsula about two hundred years before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. The term "hammock" comes from the Taíno language and originally referred to a fishing net.
Made in Chiapas, in southern Mexico, the Queen Maya embodies exceptional artisanal craftsmanship. This model stands out for a refined weaving method, passed down through generations by four families of artisans. Originally, hammocks were created from the bark of the Hamack tree, then with the flexible and strong fibers of sisal. Even today, these pieces are entirely hand-woven using a frame and a wooden or bone needle – a meticulous process that can take up to two weeks.
The Queen Maya model is distinguished by its impressive dimensions: with a width of 2.20 meters, it offers an ideal surface to relax alone or with others. Designed to comfortably accommodate two to three people, this hammock incorporates more thread in its weaving, making it even softer, more durable, and suitable for all body types.
The key to comfort lies in the curve of the hammock. It should be neither too tight nor too loose. A simple rule is to divide the distance between the two attachment points by two to get the suspension height. For example, for a 4-meter hammock, the attachment points should be about 2 meters high. An angle of about 30° relative to the horizontal is ideal to maximize comfort and reduce pressure on the ropes.
Made of nylon, the Queen Maya benefits from the properties of a material known for its strength, especially in the making of fishing nets. Designed to withstand extreme outdoor conditions – heat, humidity, rain – it remains intact where cotton would wear out faster. Although it perfectly supports outdoor use, it is advisable to store it indoors when not in use to extend its lifespan. Its breathable weave makes it an ideal choice in hot regions, where it often replaces the traditional bed.
