Premium Mexican Hammock
Mexico only makes artisanal mesh hammocks. They are so comfortable that there is only one style of hammock. Some artisans take their craft of weaving the four-thread mesh of their Maya ancestors to great detail. Like these models from Chiapas that we offer here.
But beware, it is also a very touristy country and you can also find many hammocks that are too small and poorly designed. You need to be knowledgeable and have a keen eye to understand all the nuances of its manufacture. The weight is important, as well as the thread and mesh used. The famous four-thread mesh, very time-consuming to make, invented by the Mayas several centuries ago.
First purchase in 1987
My first import from this country dates back to 1987. Here is a juicy anecdote:
At that time, I spent more than a month in the capital, Mexico City, staying with a student friend I met in the Mexico City subway. I was traveling with limited means. Latin America is a turbulent region economically, and the measures taken by governments are often radical. While I was there, the government decided overnight to double the price of five main staples: flour, sugar, oil, gas, and gasoline. The hammocks are located in the state of Yucatan, near the city of Merida, 1200 km from Mexico City, or 2400 km round trip. We took the road with a pickup truck. Overnight, our gasoline budget had doubled!! A bit expensive to go get about a hundred hammocks... But what a joy to live this adventure.
