When looking for a freestanding hammock, it’s easy to be guided by price, warranty, or advertised lifespan. Yet, there is a world of difference between two hammocks that look alike in photos. Comfort, often relegated to second place, is actually essential.
There are two main types of hammocks:
The hammock with wooden spreader bars, also called a spreader bar hammock, a westernized version. (Not knowing that you lie diagonally in a hammock as has been done for centuries in Latin America, Europeans thought it best to open it flat… The result: they invented the spreader bar hammock. It’s a bit like putting wheels on a sled because you don’t know snow. But in any case, it now makes for wonderful decorative objects!)
The hammock without bars, traditionally used in Latin America, our specialty at Tropical Hamac
The first must be stretched horizontally: you lie only on your back along the length or diagonally for the XL version. The second, without bars, hangs in a more curved way. It allows a natural diagonal position, lying down or sitting, and offers a true comfort cocoon.

Choosing a hammock stand is as important as the hammock itself. Too low, too high, or poorly adapted: the hammock becomes taut, stiff, uncomfortable. A good stand allows the hammock to follow its natural, slightly curved shape for a relaxed position and fabric that molds to your body without constraining it.
At Tropical Hamac, we have been working for over 20 years with craftsmen and manufacturers to offer you hammock stands suited to genuine hammocks. Between 1995 and 2005, we even made our own stands in our workshops, before the appearance of laminated arc models.
Our stands are designed with the right heights and the right length: nothing is left to chance.
Even our most affordable single canvas hammocks are made by serious artisans, with quality materials. They last a minimum of 10 years, including for those who sleep in them every night and wash them regularly.
We have never given in to the temptation to buy cheap mass-produced hammocks from China or India. Some resellers still call them “Brazilian hammock” or “Colombian hammock”… but look closely at the labels: the real origin will tell you everything. For us, transparency is a core value.
Do you have a damaged hammock? At Tropical Hamac, we are also specialists in hammock repair.
We show you how to replace hammock spreader bars, or even untangle the spreader bars.
Because a quality hammock can be repaired. That’s the sustainable spirit.
