For many years, Tropical Hamac has been working hand in hand with the Wayuu community, settled in the Guajira desert in Colombia. The artisans offer several color combinations, and for each combination, only five hammocks are made. Each hammock is entirely handwoven, which means the model you receive will be slightly different from the photo. The colors remain the same, but the fringes may vary, always in geometric patterns, in accordance with the Wayuu tradition that avoids figurative figures. These hammocks are truly rare pieces, which Tropical Hamac is proud to offer you. They deserve all your attention and care.
The first encounter with Colombia dates back to 1993, at a time when the country was in turmoil. The northeast, the Wayuu territory, was a real challenge: between the civil war and the highly sought-after coal convoys, it was better not to venture there with your hands in your pockets. Yet Tropical Hamac was already aware of the fame of the Wayuu hammocks, these true treasures handwoven.
Thanks to a Colombian friend, a remote connection was established with the artisans. The first order included an original request: to embroider the company name "Tropical Influences" as well as lizards and butterflies in the fringes. The message? A symbol of eternal peace... even though, in terms of execution, the lizards ended up looking a bit more like mice! One could say that weaving has its own sense of humor.
This hammock, which arrived several months later, became a unique piece, displayed for over 20 years in full sun in front of the shop, with colors still as vibrant, proof that Wayuu quality is no joke. With the improvement of the situation in Colombia in the 2000s, Tropical Hamac was able to travel on site and meet the Wayuu. These trips allowed them to see the scars left by the war, such as destroyed railway tracks and abandoned wagons. But above all, they discovered a generous, smiling, supportive people deeply attached to their traditions.
Tropical Hamac is proud to support this ancestral know-how and to offer you these authentic hammocks, made with passion and respect. Each piece is much more than just a hammock: it is a living link with a rich culture, meticulous artisanal work, and a commitment to a community that perpetuates its traditions.
