The Handwoven Maya Net Hammock from Mexico

The authentic Mexican hammock is always a unique model because people weave according to their own desire. Except for the all-natural models, which are very tedious to make. If you see a standardized hammock with the same colors always placed in the same spots, it is a copy made in China or India. The genuine Mexican hammock is unique and handmade with a four-thread mesh.

The Origin of the Mexican Hammock

The ancestor of the Mexican hammock comes from the Caribbean. Made from plant fiber, it is a net hammock that served as a bed to avoid crawling insects as well as moisture. It then gradually spread to Mexico among the Maya civilization, in Colombia, El Salvador, Nicaragua, but also in South America, especially Brazil, which is one of the largest users of hammocks in the world. Although the term "hamaca" is often used to designate this suspended bed, it is called "chinchorro" in some countries like Colombia and Venezuela. As surprising as it may seem, there is no specific word to designate a hammock in Brazil; "Redes" means "net for sleeping."

Where Do the Mexican Hammocks Sold on Your Site Come From?

For over 30 years, we have worked hand in hand with the same artisans from Yucatán, in a relationship of trust and respect. Long before fair trade labels came into existence, we had already chosen a more responsible model: buying our hammocks at a fair price, without negotiation, to support these artisans and their families.

At Tropical Hamac, we offer you authentic Mexican hammocks, directly imported from Yucatán to our warehouse in Tarnos, in the Landes region. By choosing our hammocks, you get the best of Mexican craftsmanship, respecting the traditions and the people who carry them on. You may be discovering this type of hammock and wondering what the difference is between a fabric hammock and a net hammock? Net hammock or fabric hammock? Which type of hammock to choose?

Making an Easy Knot for a Hammock

To easily install your hammock, we recommend using the grapnel knot. Easy to make, it is perfectly suited for our 8 mm diameter ropes and unties easily. To see the knot in pictures, check out our full article: How to tie a knot to hang a hammock?
