One of the advantages of this hammock is that it is lightweight and doesn’t take up much space in luggage for traveling, for example. At Tropical Hamac, we have been traveling across Latin America for over 30 years in search of the best hammocks, and the Mexican hammock holds a special place in this adventure. Long before the arrival of parachute fabric hammocks, this traditional model was already recognized for its lightness, compactness, and exceptional comfort. Even today, we consider it one of the best hammocks in the world. Here’s why:
Our hammocks come directly from southern Mexico, from villages like Tixcacalcupul, Chemax, or Chichimilá. There, it is often women who weave at home, in the courtyard or under a shelter, using wooden frames and traditional needles.
Their know-how is inherited from the Mayas and is passed down from generation to generation. Mothers, uncles, neighbors, everyone contributes in their own way to this transmission, because yes, there is no machine to make a four-thread stitch! Each hammock takes several days of work, making it both a precious and unique piece.
This is an ideal travel hammock, especially if you like to travel light: it weighs only 1.3 kg and takes up very little space in a bag. And yet, its strength is impressive:
Maximum load: 250 kg
About 300 cords, each supporting up to 6 kg
Sleeping area dimensions: 200 cm wide (stretchable) x 250 cm
Total length with cords: 380 cm
It is this knotless net weaving, with four crossed threads, that gives it this stretchability and incomparable comfort. It molds to the body without constraining it, while allowing air to pass through — ideal in hot weather!
Cotton is a living material, like us. It likes the sun, but not for too long, otherwise its colors fade. Here’s how to take care of it:
Wash it by hand, with a mild soap
Dry it in the shade, to preserve its fibers
Store it in a dry place, protected from rain and humidity
👉 With a little care, it can accompany you for 15 to 25 years. Some of our customers still use their hammocks purchased in the 2000s!
Little tip: avoid getting in with a watch, bracelet, or belt buckle, as this could widen some threads (nothing serious, but better to preserve them). And if you have children at home, teach them to take care of it, or opt for a canvas hammock or our very sturdy luxury hammocks.
Since our artisans are free to choose their colors, each hammock is a unique piece. No mass production here, and especially no imitations like those sometimes found coming from Asia. We group models by color families, but there may be variations in the distribution of shades (which is part of its charm).
Choosing a handmade Mexican hammock means choosing a story, a know-how, a culture. It also means treating yourself to real naps, cool, suspended between sky and earth. The Mexican hammock remains a good option when you want an excellent hammock with you on your travels.
