During our journey to Brazil, we discovered artisans who perpetuate centuries-old traditions with contagious passion. These luxury hammocks are made in the village of Varzea Alegre by Rozinha and Ceilda, who have transformed their know-how into a true international art. When you meet Rozinha and Ceilda, you are immediately struck by their energy and passion for their craft. Isolated in their village, they regularly travel to major cities in Brazil to showcase their creations and have even participated in events in New York. They also made their entry into the Guinness Book of Records thanks to the largest gathering of crocheters in the world that they organized in the village square.
Their expertise is truly unique, and each hammock stands out for its exceptional quality. In their small workshop, the weavers work with cotton percale, a fabric similar to denim, both durable and pleasant to the touch. The fringes, entirely handmade with crochet, are among the most refined in the country. The hem of the hammock is also carefully finished, including a Richelieu embroidery step done by machine for a flawless finish.
This hammock is made according to Richelieu embroidery. In the early 1600s, Cardinal Duke of Richelieu, prime minister to Louis XIII, brought weavers from Italy to develop what would become this refined embroidery technique. The Portuguese introduced it to Brazil in the 17th century, where it is still practiced today. Almost disappeared in Europe, this tradition survives only thanks to a few enthusiasts, and some fabrics can be admired in museums. In Brazil, weaving remains alive but is rare and precious, making each Brazilian hammock a true artisanal treasure. To learn more: The hammocks of Brazil from Mocoto
